The Lull

July 10, 2012

If ever there is an argument for the world is flat it would be me, this blog and how I disappeared over the edge. There comes a time when you must prioritize or go crazy. Since I’ve tried crazy more times than I care to share, I thought I would prioritize this time. Unfortunately the blog fell below other responsibilities of my job. What was going to be a two-week break extended into a month and before you blink, did four months just pass? I can honestly say it was a productive absence with many things accomplished, including a clean desk. Okay, it’s a relatively clean desk and while this won’t be a ground breaking blog, we’re at least back on the world.

On July 19, 2011 I blogged about switching properties to Pet Friendly designation. Joan, the occupancy specialist for these properties states the change has attracted residents. Annual Inspections and the caretaker confirm the apartments are still in good condition. Overall, the experience has been a positive one.

In the February 23, 2012 we complimented Doug Best on his nomination for the MADD Hero Award for Drugged Driving Enforcement. He won!! Congratulations Doug!

Finishing on a sad note, this directs you to the November 11, 2011 story written about Earl Komis who passed away this spring. https://wheretodwell.wordpress.com/2011/11/11/savior-of-homerite/

Earl was a tenant at HomeRite Apartments in Ortonville, MN. He volunteered his time and became the pseudo caretaker for the building. Because it was a struggling property, only occasionally were we able to offer him gift cards to the local grocery store or gas station. Earl didn’t mind the lack of pay and always expressed appreciation when we could offer him something. As the property financials improved and caretakers changed, Earl became part-time caretaker for a stipend towards his rent. This charming elderly man worked harder than a few of our younger caretakers! We will miss Earl for many reasons, the wonderful work he did at the property, the positive advocacy he was for the building and Ortonville, and the sharp eye for detail that makes the apartment or building just look better. Mostly, we will miss Earl not as a caretaker but as a friend, with his charm, his grace, his chuckles, his stories and of course, his jokes.
